An increase in blood glucose to a high level in blood is referred as Diabetes. Your food is responsible for providing Glucose to your system. Glucose primary job is to provide energy to our cells. They are absorbed by the cell with the help of a hormone named Insulin.
The medical condition in which your body does not make Insulin is called Type 1 Diabetes. Whereas, Type 2 Diabetes, in which your body is not been able to use available insulin well and not been able to make it as well. This is the most common type of today. Without insulin, the produced glucose stay in this system and hence it keep getting higher. There is another condition which is called Pre-Diabetes. It’s a condition where insulin is being produced by the body but in sufficient quantity and hence glucose levels are high but not as high to be considered a Diabetic.
High level of glucose over a long period of time, have a very serious side effect to the different body organs. It can affect your nerves, eyes, and Kidney as well as increase the risk of Heart Attack and Stroke. Pregnant women can get gestational diabetes.
There are tests that can help you find if you are suffering from it or not. There are many ways which can help you maintain glucose level to normal despite having it. Most commonly Exercise, Weight loss program and maintaining a customized clean diet.
What are the different types of diabetes?
Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational diabetes are the most common types found in humans.
Type 1 Diabetes
This Type simply means that your body is not making enough Insulin to control Glucose level. Your cells inside your pancreas, which are responsible for making insulin, are being attacked and destroyed by your Immune system. Type 1 normally found in younger age though it can happen at any point of age. This type of Diabetes need Insulin dose daily hence patients are required to take Insulin (mostly via injection) daily.
Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 means your body is not making enough insulin or not using well. This is the most common type of Diabetes and can be found at any age. Normal medication can help maintain the glucose level in most of the cases.
Gestational diabetes
This tyoe is mostly developed in women during pregnancy. Normally, once the baby is born Gestational diabetes goes away. Though is some case where it won’t go, there will be good chance that it will be developed into Type 2 Diabetes.
How common is Diabetes?
A study suggested that as of as of 2014, an estimated 29 million people in the United States of America alone are suffering for it. And every 1 of 4 of them doesn’t even know about it. About 1 in 4 of people over 65 years of age are suffering from it. And in 95% are of Type 2 Diabetes.
Who is more likely to develop type 2 Diabetes?
If you are 45 years or older, have Diabetes in the family and carry a more than normal weight, you are the prime candidate for it. A lot of things could multiply that risk such as physical activity, no exercises, high blood pressure etc.
